Obstacle supports are particularly useful at show jumping competitions and also for training to connect the obstacle pole to the obstacle stands. Obstacle supports are trays that are hooked into the obstacle stands. Obstacle supports are available in plastic, synthetic or metal.

Obstacle pads, also known as pole pads, have different depths so that the poles either fall down more easily when the horse strides or remain firmly in place. The obstacle pads are available in different materials and colours. Bar pads are used for a safe show jumping course. At Alfako, we sell high-quality metal obstacle pads.

How deep are the bowls of the obstacle supports?

The shells of the obstacle supports are between 18 and 25 mm deep. The deeper the shell, the less likely it is that the poles will fall out of the shell during a light strip. For riding training with low obstacles, obstacle pads with a shell depth of 20 mm are usually used.

In tournaments with higher obstacles, obstacle supports with a mould depth of 18 mm are used on the top bar. The shallow depth of the top bar ensures that the obstacle bar falls down directly on light contact. It is important that the obstacle pole falls down on light contact so that the horse does not injure itself if it tears the obstacle.

Deeper trays of 20 mm - 25 mm are selected for the lower poles at tournaments, as the poles are not torn on the lower obstacle supports in most cases. There are also flat bar supports without a tray depth, which are used for obstacle planks, boards and fences.

What do obstacle supports consist of?

Obstacle pads are made of plastic, metal or synthetic material. Plastic and synthetic materials are inexpensive, very light and waterproof. Plastic or synthetic overlays are often available in different colours to make it easier to identify the depth of the formwork. Obstacle pads made of metal are more hard-wearing and durable.

The disadvantage of plastic and plastic covers is that they wear out quickly and are therefore less durable than metal. On the other hand, metal pads are more expensive and require intensive maintenance. The material should be selected according to the location of the obstacle course and the frequency of use.

When are obstacle supports used?

Obstacle pads are used in riding training, show jumping lessons and at competitions. For high jumps such as the oxer and the triple bar as well as for overbuilt water ditches, for example, there are special safety pads at tournaments that provide more protection during show jumping.

Safety pads give way when horses hit them, ensuring that the pole and the horse land safely. The safety pads are mandatory for competitions for liability reasons. However, this does not mean that simple obstacle supports without safety certification are more dangerous for training.

What are the advantages of obstacle supports?

The main advantages of obstacle pads are that they are easy to attach and adjust and that they improve safety when jumping. Other advantages of obstacle pads are that there are different types and that they are compatible with standard obstacle rails.

The following list shows the advantages of obstacle supports in detail.

  • Are easy to attach: Obstacle supports are easy to attach as they can simply be inserted into the keyhole system of the obstacle stand. This lightweight technology makes it easy to adjust the height of the supports and enables simple handling when setting up and dismantling obstacles.
  • Improve safety: Obstacle supports improve safety during obstacle jumping as they reduce the risk of injury to horse and rider due to the pole falling down quickly. Bar supports enable safe placement of the obstacle bars and obstacles.
  • Different types: There is a wide range of different types of obstacle surfaces. Safety fences, for example, are officially approved fences for competitions that fulfil the safety requirements. Standard pole supports are used privately for training.
  • Good compatibility: Obstacle pads are highly compatible with most common obstacle stands and rails. Obstacle pads can be used universally as they fit into the keyhole system of almost all obstacle rails and stands.

What colours are the obstacle pads available in?

Obstacle pads are available in the colours white, red, yellow and silver. Obstacle pads for training are usually white or silver in colour. The supports for the upper poles at competitions are coloured yellow to identify them as the uppermost support and therefore as the shallowest.

In most cases, FEI-certified safety pads are red so that they can be clearly recognised by riders. In some cases, however, safety fences are also coloured white. The different colours of the obstacle pads primarily serve to improve visibility for horse and rider in order to better assess the width of the obstacle pole.
