Cross-legged stands are training stands for show jumping and are used to set up a course or individual obstacles. Cross-legged stands are also called oxer stands and are made of aluminium or metal. Oxer stands for horses are practical and are used in riding arenas and indoor arenas.

A cross-legged stand consists of a straight, horizontal pole and 3 to 4 cross-shaped feet on the ground. The feet of the stand make the oxer stand very stable and prevent it from tipping over easily, even if the horse drops the pole. How high are cross-foot stands?

Cross-foot stands are between 150 cm and 180 cm high. The size of the cross-legged stand to be selected depends on the maximum obstacle height required for your training and the size of your horse. The height of the obstacle pole can be adjusted using obstacle supports on the oxer stand.

In most cases, cross-foot stands are higher than the obstacle poles so that the horse has a boundary at the sides when jumping. A small oxer stand of up to 150 cm is sufficient for riders who perform E to M show jumping. A large cross-legged stand of at least 160 cm is necessary from advanced (S) level jumping onwards to ensure that the lateral boundaries are maintained.

What material are cross base stands made of?

Cross-legged stands are made of aluminium, durable PP material, hot-dip galvanised steel or wood. The right material for the cross-legged stand is selected depending on the storage and usage location, the rider's budget and the time available for maintaining the oxer stand. 

Cross base stands made of aluminium are light in weight and cheaper than oxer stands made of other materials. Aluminium stands are easy to clean and require less maintenance. Oxer stands made of hot-dip galvanised steel are stable and resistant to corrosion and weathering, which is why they can be stored outdoors. Wood is a natural raw material and is very durable if cared for correctly. Wooden cross-base stands require regular maintenance and are heavier than aluminium stands.

Cross-base stands weigh between 3 kg and 8 kg. The weight of the cross-base stand varies depending on the material of the stand. Aluminium weighs the least of the three cross-base stand materials: aluminium, steel and wood. The lighter the oxer stand, the lower the price.

The weight of the cross-legged stand should always be adapted to the riders who will be using the stands as obstacles. If it is mainly children who want to set up obstacles on their own, aluminium oxer stands are the best choice. Steel cross-legged stands are heavier, but more stable, more stable and more resilient. The weight of a wooden oxer stand lies between that of aluminium and steel. 

How are poles attached to the cross base stand?

Poles are attached to the cross-foot stand by hooking obstacle supports into the integrated keyhole system and placing the obstacle pole on top. The keyhole system allows the height of the obstacle pole to be adjusted as required on the supports and it falls down easily when the horse touches it. 

It is important that the poles are only placed on the oxer stand and not firmly hooked in, in order to increase safety in show jumping and conformity with the rules in competition sport. The obstacle pole on the support of the cross-foot stand should give slightly so that neither horse nor rider are injured when jumping.
