Obstacle stands, also called jumping stands, are the ideal aid for setting up obstacles. With the help of obstacle accessories such as obstacle supports, the height of the poles on them and thus the height of the obstacles can be adjusted. Vary obstacles perfectly.

Since obstacle stands can be divided into different categories and vary considerably in size, material and price, we will answer some questions on the subject in this article.

How big are obstacle stands?

Obstacle stands have an average size between 1.10 m and 1.75 m. The height of the poles on top can be adjusted individually and depends on how high the obstacle should be for the animal. The small jumping stands are suitable for ponies and the higher ones for horses.

Which obstacle stand categories are there?

Many obstacle stands come with a keyhole system. The practical principle allows riders to easily adjust the obstacle height, i.e. the height of the poles, can be varied. With a non-integrated keyhole system, there is the option of buying an obstacle rail that can be integrated into the stand. Jumping stands are also available in different colours, patterns and materials.

The different categories of jumping stands are:

  • Simple cross foot stand
  • Catch stand
  • Double obstacle stands
  • Wall and other course obstacles

Simple cross foot stand

Simple cross-legged stands are mostly available in either wood, sheet metal or aluminium and have the characteristic, as the name suggests, that the four feet of the stand form a cross. This serves to stabilise the stand, which prevents it from tipping over easily.

Catch stand

Just as with the cross-foot stands, you can choose between aluminium, sheet metal and wood for the catching stands. Catch stands are mainly used for lateral limitation, as they are wider than conventional jumping stands. This allows the horse to focus on the obstacle and not avoid it.

The characteristic feature of the catch stands are the two vertical struts inside the stand.

Double obstacle stands

Double obstacle stands are practical because they are versatile. They are twice as wide as conventional obstacle stands and therefore also have a further boundary to the outside.

If necessary, these obstacle stands can also be weighted down with water, which prevents them from simply tipping over when lightly touched.

The difference to the catch stand lies in the struts inside the stand - the double obstacle stand has two horizontal struts instead of two vertical ones.

Wall and other course obstacles

For course riding, other jumping stands are usually used. For example, the wall, which is made of wood, but has a wall look. has. Individual "bricks" can thus fall down when touched and the horse does not injure itself.

Of course, jumping stands can also be decorated in other ways. There are also stands with advertising on them or with different colours, patterns, symbols, animal pictures and much more.

What material are obstacle stands made of?

Obstacle stands are made of the material wood, aluminium, metal or plastic. Coloured wooden obstacle stands are usually made of acrylic paint. Which material you choose depends on your own needs and whether you want to store the stands outside or inside.

With some obstacle stands, it is also the case that a single stand consists of several materials. For example, the stand is made of plastic, the base is made of metal - for better stability - and the keyhole system is made of aluminium.

How much does an obstacle stand cost?

A single obstacle stand costs approximately between 80 € and 400 €. It depends primarily on which material you choose, to which category the obstacle stand belongs and what size it is. Simple obstacle stands made of plastic cost less than, for example, catch stands made of aluminium.

However, since in most cases you don't just buy one stand, but several for a course, the price goes up again at this point. Often you also need additional accessories such as pole supports, rails and poles for the obstacle. You should also take this into account when calculating the price.

When do you use obstacle stands?

Obstacle stands can be used in show jumping, on the course, but also in everyday training - so they are always used when obstacles are to be set up. Obstacle stands can be used very individually, because you can adjust the height of the poles as you need them and turn a low obstacle into a high one in no time.

For the reason that there are so many and different jumping stands, they can also be adapted to every need, to every person and to every horse. Even children can set up and take down small obstacles themselves because of the light weight.

For beginners of show jumping we recommend cavaletti. These small obstacles are set up so that they hover just above the ground and are therefore particularly suitable for beginners.
