Cross-legged stands are training stands for show jumping and are used to set up a course or individual obstacles in the riding arena. Cross-legged stands are used in riding arenas and indoor arenas, where they provide a high level of stability for the obstacles set up as well as safety for horse and rider.
A cross-legged stand is characterised by its straight, horizontal bar and its 3 to 4 cross-shaped struts (feet) on the ground. The struts make the cross-legged stands very stable and prevent them from tipping over easily - even if the horse drops the pole. The struts are also suitable for interlocking the cross-legged stands for storage in confined spaces.
In most cases, cross-foot stands are lightweight, which means that riders of all ages can easily carry, dismantle and assemble the stands. Obstacle supports are hooked into the integrated keyhole system of the cross-foot stand and the obstacle pole is placed on top. The height of the obstacle bar can be adjusted as required using the keyhole system. Discover the Alfako cross-foot stand in various materials in our online shop.
How big are cross base stands?
Cross-foot stands are between 150 cm and 180 cm high. The size of the cross-foot stand you choose depends on the maximum obstacle height you want for your training and the size of your horse. The height of the obstacle pole can then be adjusted using obstacle supports on the stand.
In most cases, cross-foot stands are higher than the obstacle poles so that the horse has a boundary at the sides. For riders who perform E to M show jumping, a small cross-legged stand of up to 1.50 metres is sufficient. A large cross-legged stand of at least 1.60 metres is necessary from advanced (S) level jumping onwards to ensure that the lateral boundaries are always present.
What material are cross base stands made of?
Cross-base stands are made of aluminium, hot-dip galvanised steel or wood. The material of the cross-base stand is selected depending on the storage and usage location as well as the budget and the time available for maintaining the stand.
The following list shows the different materials for cross-base stands, including their advantages.
- Cross base stand made of aluminium: Cross-base stands made of aluminium are light in weight and cheaper than cross-base stands made of other materials. Aluminium cross-base stands are easy to clean, require less maintenance and are characterised by their durability.
- Cross base stand made of hot-dip galvanised steel: Cross base stands made of hot-dip galvanised steel are stable and resistant to corrosion and weathering. Outdoor storage is therefore no problem for the hot-dip galvanised steel cross base stand.
- Wooden cross-base stand: Wood is a natural raw material and is very durable if cared for correctly. However, wooden cross-base stands require regular care and maintenance and are heavier than aluminium stands.
How much do cross-base stands weigh?
Cross-base stands weigh between 3 kg and 8 kg. The difference in the weight of the cross-base stand is so great because different materials weigh different amounts. Of the three materials aluminium, steel and wood, aluminium weighs the least. The lighter the cross-base stand, the lower the price.
The weight of the cross-legged stand should always be adapted to the riders who will be using the stands as obstacles. If it is mainly children who want to set up the stands independently, aluminium cross-foot stands are the best choice. Aluminium cross-foot stands have the lowest weight.
What are the advantages of cross-foot stands?
The advantages of cross-base stands are that they are versatile, are characterised by their stability, have a keyhole system for easy integration of obstacle rails, are easy to handle and can be stored in a space-saving manner.
The following list presents the advantages of cross-foot stands in detail.
- Versatile in use: Cross-legged stands are versatile, as they are used by riders in the riding arena and in indoor arenas as well as for setting up entire courses and for individual obstacles.
- High stability: Cross-legged stands have a high level of stability thanks to the 4 struts, which enables safe jumping training and competition riding. The cross-legged stand also offers optimum stability when the pole is pulled by the horse.
- Integrated keyhole system: Cross-foot stands have an integrated keyhole system, which offers a high level of convenience due to the simple adjustment of the obstacle height with obstacle supports.
- Easy handling: Cross-base stands are characterised by easy handling, as they are lightweight and can therefore be easily transported from one place to another.
- Space-saving storage: Cross-legged stands offer space-saving storage as they are easy to slot into each other and can therefore be easily stored in the corner of the riding arena, tack room or barn.
