Cavaletti blocks in equestrian sports are part of the jumping accessories and are used to help set up small obstacles. A cavaletti block is set up on each side of the obstacle pole, on which the pole is either placed or pushed in. Cavaletti blocks are used for show jumping or lunging.
Cavaletti training for horses can be organised in a variety of ways and brings variety to a conventional riding lesson for both the animal and the rider. Cavaletti blocks take on different heights with a simple twist. Turning allows the rider to adjust the height of the Cavaletti to suit their needs. Cavaletti blocks are available from Alfako as squares with a bracket to which the obstacle pole is attached.
When are Cavaletti blocks used?
Cavaletti blocks are used for show jumping, lunging with poles or for ground exercises with the horse. Cavaletti blocks are seen as a small obstacle when jumping, as training for the horse's back and gait rhythm when lunging or as variety and balance exercises when dressage riding.
A cavaletti with blocks is used in all three basic gaits of the horse. When galloping, however, the cavaletti obstacles are placed further apart than when walking or trotting so that the horse can jump over them easily. Make sure that the distance between the cavaletti obstacles is appropriate for the size of the horse (for a large horse, ensure a distance of around 3 metres).
Cavaletti blocks are also often used for dog training. For agility dog races, dog courses or private training in the garden, for example, Cavaletti blocks with corresponding poles are an ideal physical exercise, especially for highly active dogs.
What are the advantages of cavaletti?
Cavaletti have the advantages of being versatile, height-adjustable and suitable for training horses. Cavaletti also promote attention, improve sure-footedness, teach the horse various skills and optimise the animal's rhythm.
The following list shows the advantages of Cavaletti in detail.
- Versatile in use: Cavaletti have the advantage that they are versatile and suitable for jumping and lunging training, ground work and dog training.
- Height adjustable: Cavaletti are height-adjustable by simply turning the blocks and are therefore easy to adapt to the riding level or the respective riding training.
- Suitable for training the horse: Cavaletti with blocks are suitable as obstacles for training the horse, as they increase the horse's musculature and improve its balance and coordination.
- Promote attention: When working with cavaletti, the attention and concentration of both horse and rider are encouraged. The horse is encouraged to pay attention to lifting its hooves when crossing the cavaletti so as not to step on or against the pole.
- Improve sure-footedness: The attentive crossing of the cavaletti requires the horse to be extremely alert, which is why the horse's sure-footedness is improved with a cavaletti.
- Teaching skills: Horses learn the skills of balance, safety and coordination of movement when working with the Cavaletti.
- Optimise the cycle: Cavaletti exercises optimise the horse's rhythm at every gait, especially when several obstacles are set up in succession.
How high is a Cavaletti block?
A Cavaletti block is between 30 and 60 centimetres high and between 45 and 60 centimetres long. Cavaletti blocks are height-adjustable so that the cavaletti poles are either hung just above the ground or fixed 20 to 30 centimetres or 40 to 55 centimetres above the ground.
The height of a Cavaletti block is adjusted by rotating it through 90° or 180°. Depending on how high you want the Cavaletti obstacle to be for training, place the two Cavaletti blocks so that the poles are attached at the top, side or bottom directly above the ground.
How do you attach the bars to the Cavaletti Block?
The poles are attached to the Cavaletti block by either placing the wooden or plastic Cavaletti poles at the desired height on two Cavaletti blocks, sliding them into the hole provided at the end of the block or attaching them to the holder provided.
Cavaletti poles have an average length of 2.50 metres and 3.50 metres. The blocks are then placed freely on the arena or riding arena floor at intervals corresponding to the length of the Cavaletti poles. Make sure that the Cavaletti blocks are stable and that the poles lie securely on or in the block.
What materials are Cavaletti blocks made of?
Cavaletti blocks are made of plastic (e.g. polyethylene) or metal (e.g. steel). Plastic blocks are easy to transport and weather-resistant, while metal blocks are stable and robust. The installation location and the people using the Cavaletti blocks determine the material.
Cavaletti blocks made of metal are usually square blocks and are particularly suitable for indoor use due to their susceptibility to weathering. Plastic blocks are available in various shapes and colours, are particularly suitable for outdoor use and are ideal for children due to their light weight.
The choice of material also depends on the level of the horse. For young horses that are not yet familiar with cavaletti work, lightweight plastic cavaletti blocks are recommended. Cavaletti blocks made of plastic minimise the risk of injury for young horses. Cavaletti blocks made of metal are useful for experienced show jumpers, as they are more stable and can withstand high speeds.
