Cross-foot stands are training stands for show jumping and are used to set up a course or individual obstacles in your own riding arena. Cross-legged stands are used in riding arenas and indoor arenas. They are made of various materials and are used to support the obstacle poles.
Cross-foot stands are characterised by their straight, horizontal bar and their 3 to 4 cross-shaped struts (feet). The struts make the cross-legged stands very stable and prevent them from tipping over easily - even if the bar is pulled by the horse. The struts are suitable for interlocking for storage in confined spaces.
Depending on the material, cross-foot stands have a low dead weight, which is why riders of all ages can carry, dismantle and assemble the stands effortlessly. Obstacle supports are hooked into the integrated keyhole system and the obstacle pole is placed on top. In this way, the height of the obstacle poles can be adjusted as required. Depending on the material and dealer, cross-foot stands are available in different heights, materials, colours, weights and prices.
How high are cross-foot stands?
Cross-foot stands are between 1.50 metres and 1.80 metres high. The size you choose depends on the maximum obstacle height you want for your training and the size of your horse or pony. The height of the obstacle pole can then be adjusted using obstacle supports on the stand.
In most cases, cross-foot stands are higher than the obstacle poles so that the horse has a boundary at the sides. A small cross-legged stand of up to 1.50 metres is sufficient for riders competing in E to M level show jumping. A large cross-legged stand of at least 1.60 metres is required from advanced (S) level jumping onwards to ensure that the lateral boundaries are always present.
What material are cross-base stands made of?
Cross-base stands are made of aluminium, black plate or wood. The following list shows the advantages of the different materials for cross-base stands.
- Cross base stand made of aluminium: Cross-base stands made of aluminium are light in weight and cheaper than cross-base stands made of other materials. Aluminium stands are easy to clean, require less maintenance and are characterised by their durability.
- Metal cross-base stand: Cross base stands made of metal (e.g. black plate) are hot-dip galvanised, making them corrosion and weather resistant. Outdoor storage is no problem for the black plate cross base stand.
- Wooden cross-base stand: Wood is a natural raw material and is very durable if cared for correctly. However, wooden stands require regular care and maintenance and are heavier in weight than aluminium stands.
How much do cross-base stands weigh?
Cross-base stands weigh between 3.5 kilograms and 8 kilograms. The difference in weight is so great because different materials weigh different amounts. Of the three materials aluminium, black plate and wood, aluminium weighs the least. The lighter the stand, the lower the price.
The weight of the cross-legged stand should always be adapted to the riders who will be using the stands as obstacles. If it is mainly children who want to set up the stands independently, aluminium cross-foot stands are the best choice. Aluminium cross-foot stands have the lowest weight.
How much do cross base stands cost?
Cross-foot stands cost between €70 and €200. The material, height and weight of the obstacle stand play an important role in the price. The price also increases if the cross-foot stand has a special colour coating or special lettering such as advertising.
When purchasing cross-foot stands, bear in mind that you need at least 2 cross-foot stands to set up an obstacle. The above-mentioned costs of 70 to 200 euros therefore relate to one cross-foot stand. Before buying, calculate how many cross-foot stands you need for your show jumping.
