Horse accessories for equestrian sports | Alfako

28 July 2023

In equestrian sports, the right horse accessories are necessary to be able to care for your horse in the best possible way. All your horse accessories must be adapted to the needs of your horse, the way it is kept and the riding discipline it prefers. This is especially true for accessories such as saddle, halter and bit.

We show you what horse accessories are available for horses and what to look for when buying horse accessories.

What horse accessories are there for horses?

The following horse accessories are available for horses:

  • Saddle & Accessories
  • Saddle pad
  • Caveson
  • Dentures
  • Horse blanket
  • Halter & Rope
  • Lunge & Accessories
  • Grooming & Horse Care
  • Fly protection
  • Gaiters & Bandages
  • Horse feed

Saddle & Saddle Accessories

Whether dressage saddle, jumping saddle, western saddle or eventing saddle. The saddle is one of the most important horse accessories in equestrian sport and must therefore be fitted exactly to the horse. If it is not, pressure points, inflammations or malformation of the muscles can occur.

The basic equipment of the saddle also includes a matching girth, stirrups with corresponding straps, possibly a crupper and a matching saddle pad.

Saddle pad

Saddle pads, saddle covers and the like are placed under the saddle to minimise the pressure on the horse's back and to protect the saddle from the horse's dirt and sweat. A saddle blanket is cut in the shape of the saddle and a saddle pad is rectangular and thus looks further out from under the saddle.

Caveson

Just like a saddle, a noseband must not be missing from horse accessories, which are used either as a bitless noseband or as a riding bridle (with bit). A noseband consists of cheek, brow, throat and neck straps. In addition, depending on the type of halter, there is a noseband, a locking strap, reins and a bit.

Dentures

Similar to other horse accessories, there are also many different types of bits. There are, for example, the bar bits, the single or also the double broken bits. When choosing the right bit for your horse, you should make sure that it is at least half a centimetre longer than the width of your horse's mouth.

Horse blanket

In addition to saddle blankets and saddle cloths, there are additional blankets that you put on your horse in different situations.

These horse blankets include, for example:

  • Winter Blankets & Rain Blankets: Lined blankets that protect the horse from the cold and wet. Some are also made of fleece in addition to the inner lining.
  • Pasture blankets: Water-repellent, breathable and windproof outdoor blankets that keep the horse warm and dry in all weather conditions.
  • Sweat blankets: Blanket that protects the horse from cold draughts after sweating and speeds up the drying process.
  • Transport blankets & stable blankets: Windproof and lightweight to protect the horse from draughts during transport or when standing in the stable.
  • Horse walker rugs & riding rugs: Protects especially the horse's kidneys, but still gives enough freedom of movement while riding or walking.

Halter & Rope

To lead your horse from the pasture to the stable or from the stable to the grooming area, you as a rider need a halter and a suitable rope. A halter is similar to a snaffle, but has no bit and sits much looser on the horse's head. It is therefore not suitable for riding, but only for leading, tying up or lunging.

Lunge & Accessories

Lunging with a lunge, where the horse walks around you in a circle, is used for training young horses, loosening up your horse's muscles, training certain focal points and gymnastics. There are single or double lunges in different lengths.

Accessories for lunging include lunging harnesses, cross bridles, lunging whips and lunging belt pads.

Grooming & Horse Care

For the care of your horse, there is grooming equipment, care products such as hoof oil, skin care, mane and tail care or horse ointment, shampoos, disinfectants, massage equipment, horse tanning beds or clippers.

Fly protection

To help you protect your horse from flies or other insects, there are fly blankets, fly masks, ear covers, insect repellents and eczema blankets. Fly blankets keep annoying flies and insects away from your horse's coat. Add to this a fly mask and/or ear bonnet and your horse's ears and eyes are also protected.

In addition, you can spray your horse with an insect repellent to keep insects away from your horse for a long time.

If your horse suffers from eczema, you should have a blanket designed for this purpose in your stable equipment. Similar to the fly blankets, the sweet itch blankets protect against flies and also enclose the horse's neck. Many sweet itch blankets are also UV-resistant.

Gaiters & Bandages

To protect your horse's legs and hooves from injury, it is a good idea to put on gaiters or bandages. There are different gaiters and bandages for different riding disciplines and conditions. Especially when jumping, but also when dressage, during transport and in some cases also in the stable, the horse's legs need to be protected.

Horse feed

Of course, the basic equipment for your horse also includes the right horse feed. From treats, supplements and concentrated feed to salt lick - a balanced and healthy diet for the horse must be provided. You should discuss with your vet exactly which feed your horse needs.

What do you have to consider when buying horse accessories?

When buying horse accessories, one must consider the following aspects:

  • Match accessories to the horse - Especially with the saddle, the halter and the bit, the fit is particularly important, as it can lead to injuries if the fit is incorrect. Therefore, you must fit these horse accessories as accurately as possible to your horse.
  • Accessories should correspond to the riding discipline - Does your training consist mostly of dressage or show jumping? For each riding discipline you need different riding accessories, which is why the choice of saddle, halter, boots and horse feed depends on the riding discipline.
  • Consider the needs of the horse - Every horse and every horse breed has its own needs, which is why you should adapt your horse accessories to them. For example, if your horse is prone to eczema, laminitis, colds or other illnesses, you should be equipped with appropriate care products, horse blankets, eczema blankets and medicine.
  • Be equipped for every season - Remember to be equipped with your horse accessories for every season and have blankets for every weather condition - whether fly blankets in summer or lined, water-repellent blankets in winter.
  • Consider the type of husbandry - Depending on whether you keep your horse mainly in the stable or in the pasture, you need different accessories. An outdoor blanket, for example, is suitable for pasture keeping, a stable blanket against draughts for stable keeping.
  • Have a storage place for horse accessories - When you buy the accessories, you should consider beforehand where you want to store them. In the stable or in the tack room? In a locker or on a shelf?
