You can build a lick holder yourself by screwing together different pieces of wood with different dimensions. Below we have provided instructions that describe the detailed steps for building a lick holder.
Before starting the actual construction of the lick holder, you should first make a precise sketch of the material, the respective dimensions and the exact construction plan. The lick holder can then be built on the basis of this sketch. Whether this sketch is created by hand or with a programme is up to you.
Once you have created the sketch, the first step should be to mill the holes in the wooden blanks. To do this, use a pencil to draw a circle with the same distance between each of the two blanks. Measuring with a ruler is suitable for this. The drawn circles should have the circumference of the wooden bar.
The next step is to use the router to mill out the drawn circles.
Now push the wooden rod through the milled holes, on which the lickstone will later be hung. The wooden rod should be long enough so that it protrudes at least 2.5 cm on both sides of the lick holder. If the bar protrudes much longer than 2.5 cm, it can also be shortened.
To ensure that the wooden rod can be fixed in place later and does not fall out of the holes, securing pins must be attached to the sides of the lick holder. To do this, a small hole is drilled in each of the protruding 2.5 cm, through which the safety pins are inserted.
The wooden board is now screwed to the bottom of the two wooden blanks using the long screws. This creates the body of the lick holder. The hooks are attached to the bottom of the holder with short screws so that the lick holder can be hung up.
The last step is to push the wooden rod through the lick and back through the holes. If you now close the cotter pins, the lick and the wooden bar are fixed in place. The lick holder can now be attached to the bars of the box and is ready for use!
Lickstones made from crystal salt, Carpathian salt, cattle salt or flavourings such as apple or herbs can be hung in the lickstone holder. In addition to salt lickstones, there are also mineral lickstones that contain important trace elements, vitamins and minerals for the horse. However, care should be taken to ensure that there is no deficiency or excess of nutrients.
