STATE OF INVESTIGATION

SAFE AND STRESS-FREE

An examination stand for horses and ponies is a treatment box and facilitates veterinary examinations. The examination stall gives the horses a sense of security and thus ensures less stress during the examination, treatment or care. Examination stalls are also used for insemination.

A treatment stall is required for various purposes and has been built especially for nervous and restless horses during veterinary checks or vaccinations. Examination stands are available in a variety of sizes, materials and types to suit the needs of the rider and horse, as well as the conditions in the stable.

Why do you need an examination stand for horses?

You need an examination stall for horses to enable the owner or vet to examine the animals without any problems. The examination stalls are also used to immobilise horses during treatment and to inseminate the mare during the breeding season.

Some vets now make it compulsory for horse owners to use an examination stand in order to protect themselves and the animal during the check-up. There are examination stands that are offered with integrated scales so that the horse can be weighed during the examinations.

How are examination stalls for horses constructed?

Examination stalls for horses are made of sturdy, hot-dip galvanised steel tubes. There are solid wall constructions on both sides of the examination stall to prevent the horse from escaping and turning round. There are doors at the front and rear of the treatment stall that can be opened with one hand.

In an examination stall that is only used for veterinary treatments on horses, stable side tubes are installed on the sides instead of solid wall constructions. In stalls used for inseminating mares, the side walls are made entirely of wood or bamboo. This prevents the mare from breaking out to the sides, which calms her down and offers her protection at the same time.

How is an examination stand with a horse used?

An examination stall is used with a horse by leading the animal through the rear door into the examination stall until it is standing at the front, closed door of the stall. The door behind the horse is also closed and the horse stands firmly inside. Particularly nervous horses are tied up.

The closed doors on the treatment stall ensure that the horse no longer flees forwards, backwards or to the side. This also prevents the animal from escaping backwards. The sides of the examination stall for veterinary treatments are not closed to ensure that the horse can be treated from all directions.

What size are the examination stands?

Examination stalls range in size from 120 to 130 centimetres in height, 150 to 210 centimetres in length and 83 to 130 centimetres in width. The different dimensions are designed for horses, foals, ponies and young horses and offer more or less free space for the animals accordingly.

When purchasing an examination stall, the height to be selected should always be adapted to the size of the horse. The treatment stall should be wide enough for the horse so that it does not feel cramped, but narrow enough so that the animal cannot turn round. The height of the examination stall should be selected so that the upper edge of the side walls or the side bars are higher than the horse's shoulders.

The examination stall should be slightly longer than the horse itself. It is important to choose the right size of examination stall so that the horse does not jump over the sides or over the doors during the examination and does not feel too restricted in its comfort zone.

What material are examination stands made of?

In most cases, examination stands are made of steel or sheet metal and wood. The frame is made of solid steel and the doors and walls are clad with wood. Some examination stands have a rubber coating on the rear door to prevent injuries.

What types of examination stands are there?

There are four different types of examination stands: the one-sided examination stand, the two-sided examination stand, the examination stand with scales and the examination stand with tubular frame. The following list presents the types of examination stands.

  • One-sided state of investigation: A one-sided examination stand was designed for the wall connection and is placed against the wall. The test stand only has a fixed construction on one side, while the other boundary is the wall.
  • Double-sided examination status: A double-sided examination stall is a free-standing treatment box that is bounded on both sides by a fixed structure. This examination stand is positioned freely in the room and provides a 360° frame around the horse.
  • Examination stand with scales: An examination stand with scales enables the vet or horse owner to weigh the horse. Not every horse stands still during a treatment or while being weighed. The integrated scales record the exact weight of the horse.
  • Examination stand with tubular frame: Examination stalls with a tubular frame do not have solid, wood-panelled side walls, but only tubes on the sides. This makes it easier for the vet to examine and treat the horse's legs or abdomen.

What does an examination stand for horses cost?

An examination stand for horses costs between 1000 and 4000 euros. Prices vary depending on the equipment, size and weight of the examination stand. The inexpensive examination stands consist of a tubular frame, the expensive stands are made of a solid construction and have additional accessories.

Examination stalls in the higher price category have, for example, a non-slip rubber floor, wooden panelling, a foam mat on the back door to offer the horse more safety or integrated scales in addition to the frame. Shipping costs are charged additionally for all products, which in most cases range from 100 euros to 350 euros depending on the size or equipment.

What makes for a good state of research?

A good examination stall should have a heavy weight to ensure sufficient stability and guarantee safe work on the animal. The examination stall should also be able to be firmly bolted to the floor to prevent the stall from tipping over if the horse is nervous.

Sharp edges on examination stands should be avoided to prevent injuries to restless horses. Depending on whether the treatment stall is to be used exclusively for veterinary examinations or only for inseminating mares, it is important to ensure that the high-quality examination stall is equipped with either side tubes or side walls. A good examination stall does not restrict the horse and is slightly larger than the animal itself on all sides.
