Take special care to keep both the cupboard and your riding equipment clean at all times.
Below you will find a list of 9 practical ideas for saddle cupboard furnishing:
Before you start setting up your tack cupboard, you should clean it first - no matter if it is the first time or you want to tidy up your tack cupboard. To do this, take everything out of the cupboard and clean it with a sponge and cleaning agent. Let it dry or wipe it out before you put your equipment in it so that it doesn't get wet.
Think in advance where every single accessory has its place so that you don't have to search for it later in a hurry. If you always know where your riding equipment is, you only need to reach for it without thinking about it. If you put or hang the accessories such as saddle, snaffle and co. back in this place after use, the previously thought-out order will remain.
If you have to carry your saddle from the tack room to the grooming area every day, it may be advisable to replace your saddle holder in the tack room with a saddle trolley. This way you can remove it whenever you need to and transport your saddle, bridle and grooming kit from A to B. After use, put it back in your saddle cupboard.
A tack cabinet looks tidier if there are boxes in it that are labelled with the respective contents. This way, both you and other riders can find what you are looking for without having to look in the boxes. In general, boxes bring order to your tack room, as you can optimally store riding gloves, grooming equipment, horse feed or even saddle pads and horse rugs here.
If you always have your saddle pads at hand and do not want to store them in boxes, you can also hang the saddle pads and horse blankets on hangers - if you have enough space in the tack room. Take special care here that you really only store the saddle pads in the tack room that you use regularly. If there are too many accessories in the cupboard, you will lose track of them.
If you notice when putting away the accessories that you no longer use or need some of them, then it is best to sort them out directly. The saddle cupboard should not be overcrowded and should only contain things that are used on a daily basis.
The same applies to medicines: if the packaging is empty or expired, throw it away as a matter of course.
Make sure that important medicines for your horse are not lying loose in the tack room. They could leak and damage other riding equipment. Therefore, find a place for medicine cans or bottles where you can easily reach them at any time.
One way to store the medicine jars or bottles is to put them in a basket that you attach to the inside of the saddle cupboard door. This way you always have the medicines at hand, but they cannot fall over, leak or get lost in the cupboard.
Just like the medicine basket and the saddle and bridle holder, you can also attach a crop holder to the inside door or another wall of the cupboard. This way you can ensure that the riding crops also have their own place in the tack cabinet and that they do not lie on the floor.
With the saddle locker, you should pay particular attention to both putting the accessories back in the right place after use and cleaning them thoroughly. Especially saddle pads, gaiters and hoof bells can cause injuries to the horse if they are not cleaned properly.
You should also clean the bit of the snaffle after every ride so that food residues and horse saliva do not get stuck in the bit. This could lead to injuries in the horse's mouth.
In addition, it is recommended to remove coarse dirt and cobwebs from the tack room weekly. A broom is sufficient for this. Not so often, but at least during spring cleaning, you should carry out a basic cleaning of your saddle cupboard and sort out accessories that are not needed.
