If you want to build a saddle rack yourself, you can do it with just a few materials and little effort. A saddle rack can be mounted in the tack room or tack cupboard and serves as a storage place for a saddle.
Everything you need to build a saddle holder can be bought from a DIY store or you may already have it at home. In the following, we will show you how to build a saddle holder yourself.
The following overview shows you what you need to build a saddle holder. You can purchase all the materials at the DIY store of your choice.
When choosing the wood for the saddle holder, it makes sense to opt for a type of wood that is durable and dries well in wet or damp environments. This is particularly important if the saddle or saddle cover is stored on the saddle rack when damp.
We recommend using Douglas fir wood for saddle racks, as it not only has a long service life, but is also robust, weatherproof and quick-drying. Douglas fir is generally used for outdoor areas, for fences or garden sheds, for example, and is therefore ideal for saddle racks in stables.
You can build a saddle holder yourself by first sanding down the cut piece of wood to prevent injuries later on. Of course, you can also do this with a router. To ensure that the wood remains durable and retains its structure and grain, you should varnish the pieces of wood with clear varnish.
If you prefer the heavy-duty bracket in a different colour, you can use a spray paint in any colour. Make sure that you do this outdoors and on a suitable surface. Both the clear coat and the spray paint must first dry before you can continue building.
Make sure that the paints are completely dry and then place the heavy-duty bracket on the piece of wood. Mark the three holes of the bracket on the wood with a pencil and pre-drill the holes without the heavy-duty bracket.
When pre-drilling, use a drill bit that is one size smaller than the screws. Pre-drilling helps to ensure that the screws can be fastened more easily in the wood later and prevents the wood from splintering or breaking apart.
Now place the heavy-duty bracket back on the piece of wood and screw the piece of wood to the bracket. You can use the remaining three screws to mount the saddle holder in the tack room or saddle cabinet.
The materials listed above apply to the manufacture of a single saddle rack. If you would like to build more than one saddle locker yourself, you will need to increase the number of products required accordingly.
