An examination stall for horses and ponies is a treatment box and makes it easier to carry out veterinary examinations. The stall gives the animals a sense of security and thus ensures less stress during the examination, treatment or care. Examination stalls are also used for inseminating horses.

Examination stands are available in different materials, colours and sizes to suit the needs of the rider and horse, as well as the conditions in the stable. An examination stand is particularly suitable for nervous and restless horses during veterinary checks or vaccinations. 

Why do you need an examination stand for horses?

You need an examination stall for horses so that the owner or vet can easily examine the animals. The stalls are also used to immobilise horses to prevent injury to humans and animals in the process. Examination stalls are also used during the breeding season to inseminate the mare. 

Some vets now prescribe the use of an examination stall for horse owners to protect themselves. In this way, it is not necessary to additionally secure the horse with a rope, which means that the horse does not feel so constricted. 

How are examination stands for horses constructed?

Most examination stalls for horses are constructed from sturdy, hot-dip galvanised steel tubes. There are stable wall constructions on both sides of the examination stall to prevent the horse from escaping and to prevent the animal from turning round. Doors are located at the front and rear of the examination stall and can be opened easily with one hand.

In an examination stall used for veterinary treatments on horses, only stable side tubes are installed on the sides. The side walls of stalls used for inseminating mares are completely covered with wood or bamboo to prevent them from breaking out to the sides.

How is an examination stand with a horse used?

An examination stall is used with a horse by leading it through the rear door into the examination stall until it stands at the front, closed door of the stall. The door behind the horse is also closed and the horse is tied up. The closed doors ensure that the horse no longer flees to the side or forwards. This also prevents it from escaping to the rear. 

The sides of the examination stall for veterinary treatments are not closed so that the veterinarian can treat the horse from all directions. The closed sides of the examination stall for inseminations, on the other hand, calm the mare and offer her protection. 

What makes for a good state of research?

A good examination stand is characterised by its own heavy weight. The heavy weight of the stand is important to ensure sufficient stability and to guarantee safe work on the animal. The examination stand should also be able to be firmly bolted to the floor to prevent the stand from tipping over. 

Sharp edges on the examination stall should be avoided to prevent injuries to restless horses. Depending on whether the examination stall is to be used exclusively for veterinary treatments or only for inseminating mares, it must be ensured that the high-quality examination stall is equipped either with side tubes only or with side walls. 

What size are the examination stands?

Examination stalls range in size from 120 to 130 cm in height, 150 to 210 cm in length and 83 to 130 cm in width. The different sizes are designed for horses, foals, ponies and young horses and offer more or less free space for the horses accordingly. The height of the stall can be adjusted to the size of the horse.

The examination stall must be wide enough for the horse so that it does not feel cramped, but narrow enough so that the animal cannot turn round. The height should be chosen so that the side walls or side bars are higher than the shoulder. This is important so that the horse does not jump over the sides during the examination. The length of the stall should be slightly longer than the horse itself. 

What does an examination stand for horses cost?

An examination stall for horses costs between €1000 and €4000. Prices vary depending on the equipment, size and weight of the stall. Examination stalls in the higher price category have, for example, a non-slip rubber floor, wooden panelling, a foam mat on the back door to offer the horse more safety or integrated scales in addition to the frame. Shipping costs are charged additionally for all products and usually range between €100 and €350 depending on the size or equipment.

The examination stand is equipped with a door at both the front and rear and is bordered on the sides by a steel tube.
